Prana = Life
Prana = Breath, considered as a life-giving force. Prana is seen as a universal energy which flows in currents in and around the body.
Our breath is the force that gives us life, how we breath can affect our life in many ways(more ways than we might imagine).
Our emotions, our health, and our well being are all aspects of our lives that can be affected by how we breath. The more control we have over our breathing, the more we control we can have over our emotions, health and well being.
Pranayama is the yogic practice of focusing on breath. In Sanskrit, prana means "vital life force", and yama means to gain control. The practice of Pranayama dates back to ancient India and the origins of yoga, said to be around sixth and fifth centuries BCE. Pranayama is mentioned in early yoga texts such as the Bhagavad Gita, The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and Hatha Yoga Pradipika.
In yoga, breath is associated with the prana, thus, pranayama is a means to elevate the prana shakti, or life energies.
Control of the prana, or subtle energy, leads to control of the mind.
The person who has abundant pranic energy radiates vitality and strength; this can be felt by all who come into contact with him or her.
